What to Expect from Acupuncture

Understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years and is used by people for a variety of health and wellbeing reasons. It involves the gentle insertion of very fine needles into carefully chosen acupuncture points. All needles used are sterile, single-use and disposable.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is understood in terms of balance and the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced 'chee'), often described as the body's vital energy. Acupuncture points are selected according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, taking into account your individual symptoms and overall health.

Your First Appointment

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to talk about your health, your symptoms and what has brought you to acupuncture. I'll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, sleep, digestion and emotional wellbeing to build a complete picture of your health.

You'll also have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have before treatment begins.

Where appropriate, I may recommend that you speak with your GP or another healthcare professional. This is particularly important if you're seeking support for fertility, or where blood tests and other medical investigations may help to guide your care.

Your Acupuncture Treatment

The acupuncture treatment itself usually lasts around 25–30 minutes.

This is your opportunity to switch off from the outside world and simply relax. The lights are dimmed, calming music plays softly in the background and many clients become so relaxed that they drift off to sleep – often jokingly referring to it as an "acu-nap."

Depending on your treatment, I may also use:

  • Moxibustion

  • Heat therapy

  • Gua sha

  • Auricular (ear) acupuncture

  • Electro-acupuncture

  • Ear seeds

Dietary and lifestyle advice may also be discussed where appropriate.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Before your appointment:

  • Eat a light meal or snack 1–2 hours beforehand.

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing if possible.

  • Stay well hydrated.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol before your appointment.

After your appointment:

  • Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise immediately afterwards.

  • Try not to book massage or other bodywork on the same day.

How Will I Feel Afterwards?

Everyone responds differently and you may feel relaxed, energised or tired after acupuncture. I always encourage my clients to listen to their body and give it what it needs, whether that's rest, food, water or simply taking things a little more slowly for the remainder of the day.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number and frequency of appointments will vary depending on your reasons for coming for acupuncture and your individual circumstances.

We'll discuss this together during your first appointment and review your treatment plan regularly.

Some people choose to come for a short course of acupuncture, while others attend over a longer period. For many clients, I initially recommend a course of 4–10 treatments.

For Women's Health & Fertility, I usually recommend weekly appointments over a period of around 12 weeks, depending on your circumstances and any medical or fertility treatment you may be having.

Some clients choose to continue with occasional appointments because they enjoy the sense of relaxation and wellbeing they experience from acupuncture.
