What to Expect from Acupuncture
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture?
Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years and is used to support a wide range of physical and emotional health concerns.
It involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into carefully chosen acupuncture points to encourage the body's natural healing processes and restore balance.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health depends on the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced 'chee'), often described as the body's vital energy. When this flow becomes disrupted, symptoms may develop. Acupuncture aims to restore this balance and support your overall health and wellbeing.
All needles used are sterile, single-use and disposable.
Your First Appointment
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to talk about your health, your symptoms and what has brought you to acupuncture. I'll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, sleep, digestion and emotional wellbeing to build a complete picture of your health.
You'll also have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have before treatment begins.
Where appropriate, I may recommend further investigations or suggest that you speak with your GP or another healthcare professional. This is particularly important if you're seeking support for fertility or complex health concerns.
Your Acupuncture Treatment
The acupuncture treatment itself usually lasts around 25–30 minutes.
This is your opportunity to switch off from the outside world and simply relax. The lights are dimmed, calming music plays softly in the background and many clients become so relaxed that they drift off to sleep – often jokingly referring to it as an "acu-nap."
Depending on your treatment, I may also use:
Moxibustion
Heat Therapy
Gua sha
Auricular (ear) acupuncture
Electro-acupuncture
Ear seeds
Dietary and lifestyle advice may also be discussed where appropriate.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your appointment:
Eat a light meal or snack 1–2 hours beforehand.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing if possible.
Stay well hydrated.
Avoid drinking alcohol before your appointment.
After your appointment:
Drink plenty of water.
Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day.
Avoid vigorous exercise immediately afterwards.
Try not to book massage or other bodywork on the same day.
How Will I feel Afterwards?
It is completely normal to feel relaxed, energised, tired, thirsty or hungry after acupuncture.
Everyone responds differently. I always encourage my clients to listen to their body and give it what it needs, whether that's rest, food, water or simply taking things a little more slowly for the remainder of the day.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of appointments you'll need depends on your symptoms, your health goals and how your body responds to treatment.
We'll discuss a treatment plan together during your first appointment and review it regularly as your treatment progresses.
Acupuncture works best with consistency, and each appointment builds on the previous one. Although some people notice changes quickly, many conditions benefit from regular treatment over a period of time.
For many health concerns, a course of 4–10 treatments is often recommended.
For Women's Health & Fertility, weekly acupuncture is usually advised initially, ideally over at least 12 weeks, to give your body time to respond and support longer-term changes.
Many clients continue with occasional maintenance appointments once they've achieved their goals because they enjoy the sense of relaxation and wellbeing that regular acupuncture provides.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are extremely fine – much thinner than those used for injections or blood tests. You may feel a slight tingling, warmth, heaviness or a dull ache when a needle is inserted, but this usually settles quickly. Many clients find acupuncture deeply relaxing and often drift off to sleep during treatment.
-
Yes. Acupuncture is considered very safe when carried out by a fully qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use disposable needles.
As a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I follow strict standards of professional practice, hygiene and safety.
-
Wear comfortable clothing if possible. Loose-fitting trousers and tops are ideal, although it's not essential.
Many acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so clothing that can be rolled up is often helpful. Towels and blankets are always provided to ensure you feel comfortable throughout your treatment.
-
Yes. Most people are able to drive home afterwards and continue with their normal day.
Occasionally, people feel deeply relaxed or a little tired following treatment. If that's the case, it's sensible to take a few moments before driving and make sure you feel comfortable to do so.
-
Absolutely. Many of my clients are trying acupuncture for the first time. I'll explain everything before we begin, answer any questions you have and make sure you feel comfortable throughout your appointment. There is never any pressure to continue with treatment if you don't feel it's right for you.
-
In most cases, yes.
Many people choose to have acupuncture alongside conventional medical care, including fertility treatment, IVF and medication.
During your first appointment, we'll discuss your medical history and any medication you're taking so your treatment can be planned appropriately. If I feel that further investigations or input from another healthcare professional would be beneficial, I'll always discuss this with you.
